Saint Anthony of Padua “The Miracle Worker”,  “Finder of Lost Articles.” and 21st Doctor of the church is one of our most beloved Saints with a host of miracles, attributed to his intercession. He came from a noble family but was not blessed with good health. He turned that weakness into one of his greatest strengths. Saint Anthony was rewarded with the miraculous phenomenon of having the Child Jesus visit him, rest in his arms to encourage and pray with this beloved Franciscan whose preaching and sanctity converted countless souls to the Faith. This is why he if often depicted with a book and the infant Jesus.

He was born on 1195 to a Noble family in Lisbon, Portugal.  and first joined the order of regular cannons of St Augustine and later joined the Franciscan Order in 1221 at 26 years old and passed away at 26 years old. His Franciscan Brothers once told him to preach whatever the Holy Spirit put into his mouth. He did and astonished everyone not only with his zeal and eloquence, but also with his theological knowledge. This event launched St. Anthony’s preaching, teaching and he was made professor of Theology in the cities of Bologna, Montpeller and Padua, Italy.  So numerous were those who flocked to hear him that no church was big enough to house them.

St Anthony was a man who was not blessed with good health, but turned that weakness into one of his greatest strengths. He was a holy priest who truly understand the meaning of Crusade and conquered many to Christ not through the sword, but through his eloquent speech, miracles and humility. He sought martyrdom, but was rewarded instead with the miraculous phenomenon of having the Child Jesus visit him, rest in his arms to encourage and pray with this beloved Franciscan whose preaching and odor of sanctity converted countless soul to the Faith.

So many people flocked to hear him that no church was big enough to house them. He often had to preach outdoors and many miracles were related about him before his death on June 13, 1231.  This holy priest understood the meaning of Crusade, and conquered many to Christ not through the sword, but through his speech, miracles and humility. Saint Anthony of Padua, was made the 21st Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946. Numerous babies were Christened Anthony over the centuries.  Saint Anthony’s official feast day is June 13th. and  exhumation 336 years after his death, his body was found corrupted, yet his tongue was totally incorrupt, so perfect were the teachings that had been formed upon it. The feast of Saint Anthony is celebrated today on many continents with prayer, food and music.   

Let Us Pray: 
Almighty, ever-living God, You gave your people the extraordinary preacher St. Anthony and made him an intercessor in difficulties, by his aid grant that we may live a truly Christian life and experience your help in all adversities. Amen 

Saint Anthony gave a prayer to a poor woman who sought help against evil temptations. Pope Sixtus V, a Franciscan, had the prayer carved at the base of the obelisk, which he erected in St. Peter's Square in Rome.

Behold the Cross of the Lord! Be gone all evil powers! The Lion of the tribe of Judah, The root of David has conquered! Alleluia!
